The single most-misunderstood category in early-years and play-area design is soft elements — cushions, padding, mats, soft play. Buyers commonly assume "soft = safe". The standards say otherwise: padding has a specified Critical Fall Height and a Head Injury Criterion (HIC) score, both measured by drop-test in certified labs. Padding that hasn't been tested has no claim on safety, regardless of how it feels.
Buildsmith® supplies certified soft elements for nurseries, kindergartens, schools, indoor play centres, public play areas, hospitality kids' clubs and residential playrooms. Every element we supply is tested to EN 1176-1 / EN 1177 (impact attenuation), EN 71-1/-2/-3 (mechanical, flammability, chemical migration) and is supplied with HIC certification. We do not stock untested product.

Every soft surfacing element ships with a documented HIC value and Critical Fall Height: a 25mm foam tile is rated for ~0.8m, 50mm wet-pour rubber for ~1.6m, 70mm EPDM for up to 2.5m. We match surfacing depth to the equipment's highest fall point — never the cheapest surfacing that fits the budget line. KHDA, ADEK, ADM, DM and SPEA inspectors check HIC routinely on play areas; under-spec surfacing fails inspection.

What is EN 1176 soft play certification?
EN 1176 is the European playground equipment standard covering entrapment hazards, fall heights, maintenance access and structural integrity. EN 1176-1 covers general requirements; -2 to -7 cover specific equipment types. Every Buildsmith® soft-play element ships with EN 1176 conformity certificate.
What is HIC (Head Injury Criterion) drop-test for soft play?
HIC drop-test (per EN 1177) measures the head-impact attenuation of playground surfacing. The Critical Fall Height (CFH) is the maximum drop height from which the surface keeps HIC below 1000. Every Buildsmith® soft surface is supplied with a CFH-rated certificate matched to your equipment fall heights.
Are Buildsmith® soft play products REACH and OEKO-TEX compliant?
Yes — every fabric, foam, vinyl and plastic component is REACH-compliant (no SVHC chemicals above 0.1% by weight) and OEKO-TEX Standard 100-tested for skin-contact safety. Documented certification ships with every consignment.
What is wet pour rubber Dubai surfacing?
Wet-pour rubber (also called EPDM bonded rubber or seamless rubber) is a UV-stable, slip-resistant, HIC-rated playground surfacing poured in-situ in 15–60mm thicknesses depending on Critical Fall Height. We deliver wet-pour with documented HIC certificate per EN 1177.

What does HIC certification mean?
HIC = Head Injury Criterion. EN 1177 specifies a drop-test where a steel headform is dropped onto the surface from a defined height; the deceleration is measured. The result is a Critical Fall Height (the maximum height the surface can protect from). UAE early-years authorities (KHDA, ADEK, DM, ADM, SPEA) check HIC routinely on play-area surfacing. We supply documented HIC certificates with every delivery.
Are foam tiles really safe enough?
Foam tiles are safe up to a Critical Fall Height that depends on the foam density and thickness — typically 0.6–1.2m. For taller equipment (slides, climbers above 1.2m) you need thicker rubber surfacing or wet-pour systems. We specify the surfacing to match the equipment's fall height — never the other way round.
Are your materials low-VOC?
Yes — all foams, adhesives, dyes and finishes are low-VOC water-based and safe for use in occupied classrooms. We do not stock high-VOC product. Off-gassing risk in nurseries and clinics is a real safety issue and we won't compromise on the chemistry.
Can you do brand-colored or themed printed soft elements?
Yes — for nursery operators, schools, hospitality clients and play centers we deliver brand-colored and themed-printed ranges. Wall padding, soft-play kits, cushions, sensory panels and role-play structures can all be made in your brand palette and with printed graphics (jungle, ocean, space, forest themes) — all to the same EN certification.
Is the foam fire-rated?
Yes — every upholstered soft element uses BS 5852 ignition-source rated foam (Schedule 5 to fully comply with UK / EN fire-safety standards). Required for commercial play areas, kids' clubs and any space subject to Civil Defence inspection.
Are you compliant with DM, ADM, KHDA and ADEK standards?
Yes — Buildsmith® manufactures to DM (Dubai Municipality), ADM (Abu Dhabi Municipality), KHDA, ADEK and SPEA safety standards for nurseries, schools and indoor play areas. Documentation pack supplied with every delivery — required for licensing and inspection.
Do you do bespoke shapes for unusual rooms?
Yes — bespoke padded inserts for irregular alcoves, columns, sloped soffits and feature walls are a routine workshop scope. Tested foam to the specified standard, CNC-cut, vinyl-wrapped, certificate provided.
What about chemical safety on textiles and dyes?
Soft-element foam, vinyl and fabric components carry significant chemical-safety standards (REACH, OEKO-TEX). We supply only product with valid chemical certification — heavy-metal migration tested per EN 71-3, no banned phthalates, no formaldehyde release. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certificates accompany textile components. Certificates available on request.
What's the warranty on soft elements?
Foam and surfacing carries an 18-month structural warranty against compression failure (foam tiles, mats and wall padding), 24 months on welded-seam role-play structures and modular soft-play kits, 12 months on textile cushions and bean bags against stitching and fastener failure under normal use. HIC certification on impact surfacing is valid for the documented Critical Fall Height for the lifetime of the surface — periodic re-test is recommended every 5 years for high-traffic commercial play areas. Certificates and warranty documentation accompany every delivery.
